TIPS AND TRICKS

1. Backup!

Whether business or pleasure Back ups are critical if you don't like starting over. What to back up:

  • Documents
  • E mail addresses
  • Important e mails
  • Financial data
  • Templates?

2) Right click:

A useful and time saving tool; right clicking allows you to complete tasks without having to search the menu bar. Learn this shortcut. Different applications have different abilities when you right click. (Ex: save, print, copy, paste, etc. Just try it!)

3) Find Internet Sites Fast:

To save time getting to you favorite Internet sites go to the start menu and click the favorites button, this will allow you to get to the site without first waiting for your browser to load. Quick!

You can right click a favorite site and send it to your desktop; now you have a shortcut to that site on your desktop. Even Quicker!

4) KeyBoard Shortcuts:

Using keyboard shortcuts is a good timesaving practice to navigate through your applications. Learn them, love them.

(Ex: Alt F4 will close your active program, but don't forget to save: Ctrl-S.)

Some of the newer model keyboards have a key with the MS windows logo on it (usually located near the space bar) this button will open your start menu which you can then navigate with your directional pad (arrow keys).

Windows-R - Start, Run
Windows-E - Windows Explorer
Windows-D - Minimizes all open windows and shows Desktop
Windows-D - Restores all open windows
Windows-M - Minimizes all open windows (will not restore)
Windows-L - Locks your WindowsXP computer, Logoff in Pre WinXP

Cut - Ctrl-x
Copy - Ctrl-C
Paste - Ctrl-V

Add Shortcuts To Menu Bar: Change to "Quick Launch toolbar"
Turn on Quick Launch toolbar
Right-click on blank area of taskbar,
Press T for Toolbars
Press Q for Quick Launch

Windows Menus have an underlined letter in each word - pressing Alt + letter selected that menu.

5) Fit Window to Screen:

Sometimes maximized programs will "outgrow" the size of your monitor, hitting alt-space will restore it to a viewable size.

6) Refresh View and Files:

When rearranging a folder, files sometimes get displaced and/or out of order, hitting F5 will refresh your view and reorganize your files.

7) Add Shortcuts To Menu Bar:

You have a shortcut box located to the right of your start button, this bar normally contains icons for internet explorer outlook express and your desktop; an icon that will close all programs and show you your desktop. You can also add icons to this box for easy access, to do this just click and drag an icon into the box and let go.
